AI Act approved by the European Parliament today
13/03/2024
By Delia Belciu, AI and Data Committee Chair, DB Law Office, Romania

After the agreement reached unanimously with EU countries, the European Parliament has voted with a large majority today, 13 March 2024, the landmark Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) Act, which sets out rules on how AI will be regulated in the European Union with a probable influence around the world.

In short, the AI Act establishes obligations for AI based on potential risks and level of impact. For example, certain AI applications such as social scoring, AI used to manipulate human behaviour, etc., will be banned in the European Union, others considered as high-risk will have to comply with strict requirements, while online deepfakes will have to be clearly labelled.

The complex path of implementation of the AI Act will be opened soon.
